John the Ripper: password Decryption This tool is really good at decripting weak passwords. My virus checker thinks it's a trojan, but I suspect that may because some "root kits" contain this program.

I ran this on my /etc/shadow (password file ) and it found within 2 minutes all the passwords that were dictionary words. It's still running ( about an hour now) To my suprise it has not found a short password with a letters and numbers. Perhaps it does only alpha attack by default. I need to read the docs.

Parallelization of John the Ripper (PDF) what I don't see is a package to compile and use. Idealy this could be run on clusterKnoppix for max performance.
